I got the wood!!

Today I bought the wood that will soon become my R2's frame! I have a nice long weekend so I will be laying out the measurements with the hope to cut in a few weeks!! I hope to have the frame finished by the end of April, but that all depends on mother nature and the spring showers!

Dome update: All the domes are getting laser cut with the hope of shipping by the end of March. Just need to sell some stuff to order more parts! ;-)

FIRST PIECE OF R2!!!

I have the restraining bolt!!! (Received in the mail on 2-11-11)

Okay, it's not much but I have a piece and it's aluminum!! I did order a dome and it should be here late March early April, the TRUE first piece. ;-)

I'm working on selling off a few things so I can buy some more bits. My buying list...for now...

• All dome pieces. Depending on cost and budget the front and back logic surrounds could be aluminum. Everything else will be resin.


• Skins!! I need the aluminum body for R2, so I hope to save and get these ASAP!


• Large Data port, Power Couplings, Octagon Ports... These are needed to help with trimming on the wood frame.


• Rockler Bearing

So this is the buy list for the year right now. The wood for the frame would also needed to be added into this. My plan for 2011... Dome and body of R2 with some paint and together. I hope to start the legs too, but let me get that frame worked out first. ;-)

More R2 Research....

Monday (Feb. 28th) I received three R2LA DVDs in the mail. These are from 2004, 2005, and 2009 and are load with great info! Last night I watched all of them but for one, which I finished this evening after work. A nice demo on how to work with LEDs, something I have always wanted to try. Now, to buy a soldering iron and have some fun!!

Been away....

Updates are coming!! Been away from building and what not for the last two weeks. Lots of personal issues have come up, but starting to get back into the swing of things. Look for a R2 update as well as a Cyberman update later today!!!!

GONK....GONK....

So while at Wal-Mart last week I found some 18 gallon totes marked down. At $4 each I couldn't pass them up! After two years, I've started working on a GONK droid! Not much yet, just cut off the handles and added a pan on the front. More to come...but for now check out the pics!!

My first piece for R2!!!

On Saturday I ordered my first piece for my R2.... the dome!! Should be here sometime in March so I'm excited!! I've also decided on what to use for the frame. I will be building a wood frame with the plans from the R2builders group. I'm hoping to buy the first of the wood in a few weeks, then lay the measurements out. Start cutting in late March, early April!!

Next on my list is to sell more stuff on Ebay so I can buy all the pieces to put on the dome!! Hoping to do that this weekend!!! Can't wait to get this project up and running!

R2-D2 :Future Astromech!!

So which droid should I build? I could do R2 and be like everyone else? What if I go to an event and I want to bring R2, but someone else has one? Ah, I think I have a fix for that!

After researching and thinking which droid I wanted, I decided it HAD to be R2-D2! I mean come on it's R2! Everyone knows R2 because he is so iconic. So, if I'm spending a huge amount of money and time on a project it has to be R2.

But as I looked over all my pictures and figures I noticed something. R5-D4 has a different head and a few different color parts. So, I will be fixing my R/C R2 up to be interchangeable with R5 for events. This way if someone else has R2 then swap out the head, two doors, and two utility arms and I have an R/C R5!

Now..... wood or styrene....? ;)
